πŸ™…β€β™€οΈ Steering clear of "Engagement Bait" on Social Media

Hi there Reader!

If your organization has been active on social media for some time, you may be familiar with the term "Engagement Bait" A while back, Facebook announced that they would be taking measures to restrict the reach of posts that β€œtake advantage of [the] News Feed algorithm by boosting engagement in order to get greater reach.”

Some examples include using the phrase "Comment below!", asking people to share a post with the condition that they will be entered into a contest if they do so, and encouraging people to tag others in an image that they are not actually in.

The problem with these types of tactics is that they are using Facebook's features in a way that is different than their intended purpose.

So, how can you still cultivate authentic engagement with your audience without accidentally violating Facebook's rules and hurting your visibility in the process? After all, engagement on our posts is one of the best ways to increase organic reach.

A lot of it comes down to how you word your posts. For example, instead of just saying "comment below", ask people to share an experience they have had in the comments that relates to the topic, invite them to express their opinion, etc.

This is a very subtle distinction, but it will ensure that your content doesn't get bumped down the line or blacklisted. It also encourages more authentic engagement and relationship-building with your audience as you are inviting conversation rather than just trying to rack up quick responses to manipulate the algorithm.

Try out these tips and let me know what you think!

Happy Thursday Reader! One of the biggest misconceptions about social media is that consistency means constant posting. In reality, consistency is about rhythm - not volume. It’s about choosing a schedule you can maintain, content you feel good sharing, and a pace that fits into your real life. Showing up twice a week, intentionally, will always be more effective than posting every day for a week and then disappearing for a month. If social media feels heavy right now, it might be a sign that...

Happy Thursday Reader!Today I wanted to share the first step in choosing the social media platforms that make the most sense for your business or nonprofit. 1. You need to have a clear understanding of who your target audience is before you can decide which platform will work best for reaching them. Think about things like age, gender, location, interests, and income. The more specific you can be, the...
